Ingredients
  • 1 can sliced water chestnuts, drained (8 ounces)
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 jar sliced mushrooms, drained (4-1/2 ounces)
  • 6 tablespoons butter, divided
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup 2% milk
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon reduced-sodium soy sauce
  • 1/8 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
  • Dash salt
  • 1 package frozen french-style green beans, thawed (16 ounces)
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup crushed french-fried onions
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. In a small skillet, sauté water chestnuts, onion, and mushrooms in 2 tablespoons butter until the onion is crisp-tender (about 4-5 minutes). Set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, melt remaining 4 tablespoons butter; stir in flour until smooth.
  4. Stir in milk, chicken broth, soy sauce, hot pepper sauce, and salt. Bring to a boil and cook until thickened (about 2 minutes).
  5. Remove from heat and stir in green beans and shredded cheese.
  6. Spoon half of the bean mixture into a greased 1-1/2-quart baking dish.
  7. Layer with the water chestnut mixture, then top with the remaining bean mixture.
  8. Bake, uncovered, for 45 minutes.
  9. Top with crushed french-fried onions and bake for an additional 5 minutes.
